Driver jobs are among the most searched vacancies in the Gulf, but the licence question is where many applicants go wrong. Before you accept a driver job in Dubai, check whether your current licence can be exchanged or whether you need to pass UAE tests.
See current driver listings on Dubai jobs and Gulf jobs.
Which Foreign Licences Does Dubai RTA Exchange?
The Roads & Transport Authority (RTA) service page lists 20 countries whose driving licences can be exchanged for a Dubai licence: Austria, Belgium, Britain, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Italy, Japan, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Romania, South Africa, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Turkey and the United States of America. Some need a translation or legalisation.
India is not on that list, so Indian licence holders should not assume a direct exchange. Contact the RTA or a licensed driving institute for the current process before you travel, because RTA guidance and lists can change. (An older RTA handbook shows a longer list, so always check the live RTA page.)
What This Means for Applicants
- Read the vacancy carefully: some employers ask for a UAE licence only.
- Do not pay anyone who guarantees a licence or a job. Employers are responsible for recruitment expenses under UAE Labour Law.
- A visit visa does not give you the right to work, including as a driver.
- Heavy-vehicle and passenger-transport roles may carry additional permit requirements; ask the employer which permits apply and who pays.
Apply Safely
- Get a written offer verifiable through MoHRE and confirm the company in the National Economic Register.
- Wait for the electronic work entry permit before travelling.
- Check any Indian recruiting agent on eMigrate. See genuine job consultancies.
About Salaries
We do not publish salary ranges in this article because no official source gives reliable pay figures by job, and the numbers on other websites vary widely. Compare several current job advertisements for your role, and make sure your offer letter states the basic salary, allowances, accommodation, transport and medical insurance clearly before you accept.
