How a Bahrain Work Permit Works (LMRA)

The Labour Market Regulatory Authority (LMRA) issues work permits. This is its published process for a new permit.

  1. An expatriate must obtain an official work permit from an employer in the Kingdom before arrival.
  2. The employer applies through the LMRA’s Expat Management System (EMS) and pays the administration and job-advertisement fees. The advertisement fee applies only to workers recruited from outside Bahrain.
  3. A medical report from a Wafid-accredited centre in the worker’s home country is required and must be no more than two months old.
  4. Processing takes 21 working days for applicants from outside the Kingdom and 3 working days for applicants already inside it.
  5. After approval the employer pays the permit fees and prints the work permit from EMS. The residence permit is printed once the worker arrives.
  6. On arrival, the worker must give biometric data to the LMRA within one month.

Private-sector employment is governed by Labour Law No. 36 of 2012. Check the current text and your contract for hours, probation, leave and notice, because summaries online differ.

Bahrain Is an ECR Country: What Indian Workers Must Do

Rules from India’s Ministry of External Affairs (MEA).

  • The MEA lists 17 countries for which emigration clearance is required, and Bahrain is one of them. All persons with ECR-endorsed passports going to these countries to take up employment require emigration clearance through the eMigrate portal.
  • Ask any recruiting agent to show the original Registration Certificate issued by the Protector General of Emigrants. Sub-agents are not permitted under the Emigration Act, 1983.
  • The MEA says not to pay more than the equivalent of 45 days’ wages as offered in the contract, subject to a maximum of Rs 20,000, paid by demand draft or cheque against a receipt.

How to Apply for Bahrain Jobs Safely

Five steps from CV to work permit.

  1. Prepare a clear CV and keep your passport and certificates ready.
  2. Apply to the vacancies above using the contact details in each listing.
  3. Ask the employer to confirm in writing that it will apply for your LMRA work permit before you travel.
  4. Get an offer stating salary, allowances, accommodation and contract length.
  5. Never pay for a job or a “free visa”, and check any agent on eMigrate first.
